The crowning event of the 2010 SECRET WARS Euro League:
AMSTERDAM vs. BIRMINGHAM

Seventeen teams started out last February and eleven action packed months later we were down to two! The first ever 6 on 6 battle in Secret Wars history on the biggest wall ever built in Secret Wars history - the old tag line "Go BIG or go home!" had never been more appropriate.

Amsterdam's way to the final had been rocky - just about scraping through the group stage and winning their Q-final through a rock-paper-scissors tie breaker. Birmingham on the other hand had been very consistent and impressed in the semis with one of the best Secret Wars pieces ever. No wonder the Brummies where considered the clear favourites..

The Birmingham six arrived wearing balaclavas and two big coaches filled with fans in tow - no messin' around.. Team Amsterdam battled in complete chef outfits and painted on moustaches - all messin' around!

Team Birmingham impressed in the earlier rounds with their concepts and in particular the coherent battle pieces. Its not easy to make different artists with different styles blend.
Unfortunately the 13x3.6m wall seemed a bridge too far for the complex concept chosen by B'ham mastermind Chu. They struggled to get it all done on time and provided the crowd with great entertainment through some frantic speed painting during the last ten minutes.

Amsterdam kept things simple and produced a very strong piece. Going into the judging it was clear B'ham could be in trouble, but some fantastic penmanship was clearly on display. Would it be enough?

After the one-of-a-kind beatbox extraordinaire Reeps One had treated the crowd to his new set it was time for the four judges to join the crowd in deciding the winner..

Gonna keep this short and all about the pics... Basically I went on a solo 24hr roundtrip to Malmo and back via Copenhagen this weekend! It was hectic, tiring but super fun to say the least... Intense would probably be the perfect word!

Secret Wars x Conspiracy for Good

We joined the launch of Conspiracy For Good (the first alternate reality game on a large scale), hosted by youth agency Ruby Pseudo Consulting under the arches in London Bridge. With entry being secured via the donation of an old mobile phone to Envirofone and many other charitable aspects, it was definitely a worthwhile event to be involved in.

Monorex contributed to the night by running a rare one on one Secret Wars battle between Mr Gauky and Hicks. Winner Hicks kindly donated his prize of £100 to Kids Company! In the main room a stellar line up was topped by the the 2009/2010 British Beatboxing champion Reeps One who went down a storm!

So after a very busy 4-5 months of qualifying battles - we now have our final 8 teams for the upcoming Q finals.....

Along the way we have witnessed some very controversial and interesting results - most notable in the first month when Team Malmo made up of all girls.. went to Glasgow and won hands down!

A huge thanks must go out to all the artists and promoters who have been involved up to now (from all 17 teams)... Without the entire network Secret Wars would not be what it is today!

Secret Wars Battle at UPFEST Bristol

After a late start, traffic filled drive and a lot of swearing at the Sat Nav by the female chauffeur (me) we finally arrived in sunny Bristol at The Urban Paint Festival! Hicks, Jebba, Riff, Reeps and I all dispersed rapidly to walk around and marvel at the impressive live art on display.
We soon stumbled across Keefy G (of Secret Wars Brum fame) and Mr Phill Blake; who was painting an amazing piece on one of the walls.
Battle time grew nearer and the guys parked up on the pavement to stratergise and sketch

As 6.30pm approached the crowd began to gather in the main room; all eyes focused on the stage at the huge battle wall. It finally kicked off after Reeps One blew everyone's faces off with a cheeky little beatbox preveiew and Keith explained what was about to go down in true Australian/Brummy drunken style.

The Secret Wars team, consisting of Hicks, Jebba & Riff had decided to mock the Upfest guys trademark robots with organic scenery, neanderthal characters and monkeys ripping apart robots!

But Snub and his team retaliated with a play on words; changing Monorex to Mono Sux.. which meant that Keith had to hold me back from jumping on stage and attacking them in a crazy act of martyrdom on behalf of Terry.

Thankfully no blood was spilled, merely paint! And the battle continued with a larger and larger crowd gathering and trying to form an opinion on what was a very close call between the two teams

The battle came to a close and the crowd was asked to vote; Secret Wars received a very impressive roar from half of the crowd but the Upfest guys on home turf were greeted with a louder crowd vote. Judges votes left the result at 2-1 to Upfest! But there was no denying in anyones mind that Hicks, Jebba and Riff produced an amazing wall!

Unfortunately a full band set up on the stage before we got a chance to get any full wall snaps..

Later that night Upfest was treated to not one but TWO insane beatbox sets from Reeps One who left everyone grinning in awe of his skills.. he even managed to melt Hick's face.

All in all it was a pretty excellent day out.. which left the guys so exhausted that they slept the whole way home in the car!

Secret Wars has a busy year ahead and we are hitting 20+ countries again - which is crazy! Over the last 2-3 years we have had some great fun on the road (including the old Don't Sleep Tour), memories that will stay with us until our elderly days....

Upto now only the artists and Secret Wars / Monorex team have been luckily enough to experience these road trips... BUT in celebration to the launch of the EURO LEAGUE and the fact we now need our local fans to support all the teams in the away games (to win those points)... We want to try and organise an official travel club - where hopefully using the power of bulk orders for flights / coaches / hotels etc we can offer you better rates than the high st!

You will travel with the team and be given local tips on what to check out while in town... More extras to follow!

Secret Wars was invited by Nissan Cube to battle on HUGE walls down at the Truman Brewery for the exciting launch of the Cube car!

Hicks and Discoteck went head to head and the video below was their thoughts before the show.

To celebrate the forthcoming launch of Japanese design icon, Cube, Nissan is unveiling a unique creative destination in East London: Cube Store in collaboration with Colette, Paris.

Cube Store will include the UK’s first ever pop-up shop from celebrated Parisian design emporium, Colette, Just in time for Christmas shopping , Colette has handpicked an eclectic range of Japanese inspired lifestyle products from renowned international designers to feature in Cube Store. The centrepiece of the retail exhibition will be the iconic Nissan Cube vehicle which will be showcased at the venue for a limited time only.

The conceptual space of Cube Store will also act as a creative forum playing host to a series of avant-garde music, fashion, design & art inspired evening experiences for the most inquisitive, inspirational and creative minds in the capital.

For me this is very special as we first saw the car 7 odd years ago in Tokyo, Japan... It blew my mind when such an odd, funny but innovative car past by... We saw lots of pimped out versions as well and I really knew from that point that these alien vehicles were going to be BIG (Not only in Japan but Europe) one day!

So fast forward into time and here we are... We are very proud to be associated with such a car and hope to be driving one in the very near future ;)

" There are some things the Japanese are just better at than us, but there are other things we just don't get. Tentacle porn, for one. The Nissan Cube was one design that never really took off outside the land of the rising sun, but at the Geneva International Motor Show we've seen a rounder, softer, less cube-like Cube for the European market.

This third generation of Cube will launch in Europe in 2010. It'll be powered by 1.5-litre diesel or 1.6-litre petrol engines over here. Car Craver Rory 'Ruler of the Road' Reid met the eco-friendly Denki Cube at the British Motor Show last summer, and an electric version of the new Cube is reportedly in the pipeline.

Showing a level of whimsy not usually found in PR nonsense, the Cube's press release suggests that the car mixes "the charm of Godzilla and the wit of Mothra". We don't remember Godzilla being that charming when he was stomping Tokyo, or Mothra zinging around too many bon mots, but we get the idea: it's wacky, it's quirky, it's -- yes -- zany.

The idea of the cube shape is that the wheels are placed as far into the corners as possible. This creates more space inside, and gives the car a long 2.5m wheelbase. The rear window has an odd asymmetrical shape, wrapping around the back corner of the car to give the left-hand driver an unobstructed view. Monorex and edding UK were shortlisted for 3 of the 8 awards this year, which is an unheard of achievement - we walked away on the night with one of those 3 awards "The Lloyds Innovation" prize... Congratulations to everyone who has helped make Secret Wars what it is today, from the artists battling to my guys back stage who make sure lights are on and walls are fresh white!

A special thanks to Andy from edding for making this all happen, as he was the man who filled in that crazy 32 page doc to apply at the start ;) well done sir!

The award was hand carved in Afghanistan (Kabul) by a charity foundation called the Turquoise mountain.

A few eyebrows were raised when we won the award, as we were the underdog on the night - going up against people like BP and the Royal Opera House...

After losing the first two awards silently (in pain), a lot of passion was shown when Kate Mosse read out our name as winners for the final award - we all jumped up with huge screams of YES, C,mon...etc and started cuddling each other (man passion :).

To eat cost £200 each but as you can from the starters, it was well worth it!

Gabriella from Redbull added some much needed beauty to a table of lads..

Afterwards Classic FM and The Guardian interviewed us and we were congratulated by many random people, a great night and I hope we can apply again with the School Wars concept.

Watch out as we are going for all 8 next year!

EUROPEAN LEAGUE TEAM SERIES - 2010

SECRET WARS IS RE FORMATTING AND ROLLING INTO 2010 WITH A DIFFERENT KIND OF BATTLE PLAN!

After 3 and a half years of single battle series locally in over 20 countries, we have decided to try something different and potentially more exciting for 2010... Introducing the Secret Wars EURO LEAGUE!

"When we started Secret Wars 3 years ago, it was influenced heavily by various things from the Marvel comic, to Warriors and Fight Club. After experiencing the team battles around the World and seeing the benefits of this compared to the singles battles, we decided on trying it as a complete 6-8 month series!"

"I have noticed the crowds are more vocal and patriotic towards team battles - there seems to be more at stake and I love watching the artists free-styling alongside each other.... You never know what will come out the other end!" Terry Guy (Founder of Monorex and Secret Wars)

The rules are the same but the structure of the competition and dynamics of the battle are slightly different - see below for details.

1st Round - Group league qualifiers

Four groups of 4 teams with the top two teams qualifying
Rather than a knockout cup comp, we have decided to make this a little more interesting and maybe fairer - Each game will be a league match with each judge vote and crowd vote worth a point (so 3 points available per battle)!
Each team will play home and away against the others in their group

Quarter finals

With the top two teams going through from each group, we will be left with 8 teams.

The winner of GROUP A will play the 2nd place of GROUP B and the winner of GROUP B will play the runners up of GROUP A...and so on!

These will be played over a two leg format with away counting for double if a tie occurs.

Q-final 1

GROUP 1 WINNER vs. GROUP 2 RUNNER UP

Q-final 2

GROUP 2 WINNER vs. GROUP 1 RUNNER UP

Q-final 3
GROUP 3 WINNER vs. GROUP 4 RUNNER UP

Semi finals

These will be played over a two leg format with away counting for double if a tie occurs.

GRAND FINAL

This will be hosted at a neutral venue, TBC nearer the time

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE COMPETITION

On the night

90 minutes on the Casio battle clock
Only black edding markers and black acrylic paint can be used to paint
No other markers can be used
No pencils / sketches should be on stage or used (loose rule)
Each team has to stay within the allocated space, if they creep over then there will be a 1 point deduction
All teams are made up of 6 selected artists, but only 3 can travel and battle per event (tactical reasons)
Battles are judged by 2 nominated and neutral guest judges + crowd vote

Competition

The competition starts as a 4 grouped league concept
There is a point gained for every vote (3 points in total available for each battle)
The top two teams from each group will go through into the Q-finals
If for some reason there is a draw of points with two teams in second place, then we will favour and send through the team with more away points
Each team will play each other twice (home & away)
The Q-finals / S finals will all be based on (home and away) knockout games
The final will be held in a neutral city (preferred venue will be London / Birmingham)
The grand final will be judged by an extra 2 judges, making 5 in total

SECRET WARS X OFFSET - SPECIAL EVENT

Having introduced the infamous live street art battle to Dublin back in July, Secret Wars picks back up its pens for a very special battle.

At 7pm on Friday 6th November, Secret Wars will be hosting a one off clash with OFFSET in The Car Park of The Bernard Shaw. This event will see Secret Wars Dublin battling some of our guest speakers chosen to represent OFFSET.

Originated in London back in March 06’, Secret Wars has been a revelation which has spawned into a cultural movement that is spreading across the globe. Normally held in dark corners of cities such as New York, London & Malmo, artists gather with black paint markers to follow the simple rules of drawing live against each other for 90 minutes. The winners are decided by the reaction of the crowd and the votes of two judges on the battle picture of the artists.

This Dublin battle promises to bring together some amazing & creative talent from both teams. An event not to be missed! Music on the night will come from 2 guest DJ’s and a surprise act from the UK.

The brief is to ‘explore the idea of being interconnected in the context of the environment and climate change’.

Ryan Frank free-range furniture designer prepares for battle with international art

Ryan’s latest project the ‘Shoreditch Shelf’

becomes a battle field for premier art group

SecretWars x Ryan Frank

For the first time ever this live art battle will take place directly on to a Shoreditch Shelf in the Bricklane Gallery on Thursday the 24th at 3pm.

Artists involved: Stika, Inkie, Alfa and Moose and Yeti

Friday the 25th the Secret Wars posse take their markers and might to the courtyard of 93 Feet East, where they will step onto a purpose built stage and commence another head to head bout of illustrating. ‘six artists, six boards, 60 minutes’

The completed boards will be put to the public vote and the winning two will be made into a Shoreditch Shelf.

The shelf and the remaining boards will be displayed and auctioned by the Bricklane Gallery, with a follow up exhibition.

A completed Shoreditch Shelf and ‘Spruce’, Ryan’s new range of stackable stool will also be on display and in use during the 3 day event.

Origins of The Hackney Shelf

The now iconic Hackney Shelf originated when large white boards were installed at graffiti ‘hot-spots’ around East London. The concept is to present a blank canvas to the public. These blank canvases attracted a variety of random graf and sporadic stenciling, once covered in graffiti they were removed and transformed into mobile shelving units, bringing the street indoors.

This has got to be up there with some of the best battles in SW history - The Irish really do know how to party and look after there foreign guests (us). When we arrived we found out our accommodation was a two floor glass penthouse with a 8 man jacuzzi, oh and just to make us settle in a little easier the Irish guys had organised sponsorship with Bulmer's Light - so we had 15 crates next to the jacuzzi for some messy nights ahead.

Big up to Andrew for linking this all up and making it happen with such efficiency - The schedule was as hectic as NYC but really well organised!

Over the 5 days staying in Dublin we were interviewed by 2 national radio stations and featured on live morning IRELAND AM tv - alongside painting at DC party and a skate festival called Kings of Concrete....Oh and dropping some illegal graff characters around the city.

The battle itself was intense and electric, the Irish crowd came in there masses and even when the venue was packed (300+ people) more followed (another 400+) and queued outside for hours on end! I saw people climbing over the beer garden wall trying to get in.... Including kids with sketch books desperate for the SW artists to sign their black books.

We ended up going on to lose the battle 2-1 against Dan Leo and his boys but there was not a lot in it and the crowd gave a fair cheer both ways.

Bulmer's commissioned us to paint a large moving billboard in central Dublin, parked illegally and causing traffic mayhem - we somehow managed to persuade and charm the police to let us stay all day because they liked the work on display!

Themed on "Monkey", the picture shows the two characters filling up the water demon with cider... A slight adaption to the actual show ;)

Bizarre, surreal and true! Secret Wars held a special team battle between two of the biggest illustration agencies in the UK.

It was hosted in the Raphael Cartoon gallery - On the night it looked so crazy as we were doing live art in front of 8 or so priceless paintings from the 1500's and owned by her majesty the Queen.

It took a lot of talks to set this one up but after we told the Royal family we would use spray paint nor drink inside the gallery... They were cool! ;) She even said she was a huge SW fan!

NYC DIARY - Touch down in NYC (Days 1, 2 & 3)

Where do you start... This 10 day tour of NYC was one of the hardest and grueling trips away yet!

Forget the drama on the Don't Sleep European tour - What we went through in the first 3 days in NYC was much worse. Let me try and quickly explain what went down:

So the trip started off on a positive note with all the guys meeting at Monorex HQ, we all then slowly worked our way to Heathrow airport to check in on the lovely Virgin Atlantic. So far so good, everyone was present and on board our 6.5 hours flight!

@ JFK

When we touched down in NYC, we had our first small hiccup as Jay (Secret Wars Southampton) got stuck in customs for 3 hours - basically because he has a Arabic background! Crazy but true...NYC and America in general is not an easy place to be entering these days.

While waiting everyone was slightly panicking as we had 200+ SW t-shirts in our bags, that looked like we were smuggling through customs to sell...

After a couple of coffees and macchiatos, Jay was released on bail (joke) and was told to return to the UK within ten days.

Taxi to Brooklyn

Outside JFK there are lanes and lanes of taxis all trying to hustle tourists into over priced vans, after talking with a few we quickly realised that the price should be $75 rather than the $200 we were originally quoted for a 9 man van. Tip: Use booking desk inside for best price!

After loading up we all jumped in for a hot and sticky ride to Brooklyn, this ride was meant to take 30 mins tops but our luck had truly run out as we were stuck in traffic jams for over 2+ hours...The Secret Wars team were melting faster than ice creams on the beach - Jimi and co all resorted in stripping down to just shorts, due to shortage of cold air in the van.

The Apartment

We finally arrived at the apartments 4+ hours late and then found out our landlord who had the keys for check in decided to go off and have food, leaving us all stranded on the streets for over 4 hours!! The guy would not answer phone calls and explained it was our fault for being late ?!?!?!? So we were patient and all drank 40's on the street hoping he would be back soon...But this was not his plan and after much team talk, we all decided the next best thing was to go leave our bags at our friends (James your a star) and then get wasted in a bar in Williamsburg...It was a fun but tiring night!

DAY 2

Reebok customs on Broadway... We were asked by Reebok USA to host a custom session, people could come and buy the shoes the guys just painted.

DAY 3 - Ecko battle

After a couple of days of drama the Secret Wars crew were finally settled and ready for action, the artists got to work in the studio and created some kick ass canvases...While Daniel (Secret Wars Sweden) and T got to work building the Ecko battle wall.

This event was a RSVP event and went on to be a cracking battle - Marc Ecko was in his element hosting and introducing the Secret Wars show alongside our main boy Reeps 1.

Ecko had invited people from the fashion and creative industry alongside celebrities from Sopranos, Def Jam etc..

Team Ecko was made up of Marcs best 3 designers within Zoo York, Ecko and Complex..While the Monorex team were the usual suspects Disco, Alfa and Jimi Crayon.

The crowd were vibing to the art and music supplied by DJ Session, the eventual winners were Team Ecko - But all in all it was a great night that ended up rolling on till 5am!

Huge thanks to Jason for helping put this all together and Marc for allowing us to use his office.

The Monorex team wall based on Henry the VIII and Rex in the city! I loved it when our guys dropped the roasted Ecko rhino, Marc came over to me and said "I cannot believe they picked on my rhino, thats dark but I have the balls to take this!" It caused a small outrage among the crowd.

Marc Ecko and Monorex got together to drop a special team battle in Marc's office - This was the first of 8 events for Secret Wars in NYC...

Marc gathered his best 3 in house artists from Zoo York and Ecko to go pen to pen against Monorex finest (Disco, Jimi Crayon and Alfa).. Both teams did not disappoint, both going all out on the battle styles!

Went to Moscow to battle "team Russia" in Secret Wars @ Faces & Laces - We had a great time and made some good friends! cheers to all that helped out and got involved and a huge big up to Reebok Russia for getting us out there.

Moscow is an amazing place and I would recommend it to anyone... Some interesting food and cheap Russian vodka always near by ;)

We had 3 days off where we checked out all parts of the city and made some good connections - we also ended up hanging out with magician Dynamo, who was actually staying in the room next door at the hotel... This guy is seriously talented, check him out on YOUTUBE.

Hicks is the new London champion!

Wow - still shocked and hungover from an amazing night...over 1200 came through the door with a one in one out all night!! Thanks for all those who came down and had the patience to chill outside.

This Secret Wars was probably the best so far - everything went perfectly and the venue was a huge step up from Cafe 1001. A very proud moment seeing how far Secret Wars has come in just over 2 years....The USA is next!

With Reeps favourite to win, Hicks came in feeling little pressure - Both guys had a plan and both were well prepared for an intense and exciting SW battle.

The crowd was electric and the atmosphere at times was tense...The battle finally kicked off around 10:30pm and people stood in awe as the guys got to work on the large white walls (12ft wide by 8ft high).

All night DJ Session kept the crowd rocking with a stack of classic tunes, with the crowd screaming with every mix.

When the time came to get the judges on stage, the tension began to mount and I found it hard to get anywhere the stage. First up to judge came Ligaya (Victoria & Albert Museum) who decide to give her vote to Hicks, then Reeps came fighting back with a massive decibel smashing crowd vote 1-1....It came down to the final judge - Brett from MTV / 1/10, after much thought and pacing on stage he finally pulled out his edding board marker and scribbled Hicks on his white board!!

We have a new and very worthy champion....Hicks (54 crew)

Thanks to all those who came down and supported and a huge thanks to the entire team on the night and edding markers for linking us up as usual.

SECRET WARS X HAVANA CLUB - REPORT

Things got messy last week down at Village Underground! In a Secret Wars special in collaboration with Havana club and edding UK - Monorex took on Innercity collective on the biggest Secret Wars wall ever built (40ft wide by 16ft high)!

The Monorex team was made up of Stika, Teck, Jimi Crayon, Mr K and Alfa - They came with a loose plan in mind, easiest way to explain would be to say they drew a Cuban party in a old skool Cadillac.

Not only was this event the biggest wall on record but the guys at Secret Wars hq also allowed a small amount of colour to help express the Cuban vibes! Probably never to be seen again at any Secret Wars event....

For all those that were lucky enough to get in and sip on free Havana cocktails (big up), and a HUGE sorry to those peeps that did not get in (RSVP AND GET THERE SOONER NEXT TIME).

Thanks to everyone that helped out and a massive thanks to WIGHT PRESERVATION for building the wall.

Head to the one off art battle at Village Underground for a fast and furious creative experience like no other. Sponsored by Havana Club, the live art battle will last for 100 minutes and pitch two teams of acclaimed artists against each other in a bid to produce the freshest and most exciting wall mural.

Art battle at Village Underground
Celebrating street art and Cuban culture in a creative and original style, the art battle at Village Underground is a combined effort between the Secret War crew and Cuban rum giant Havana Club. Using only coloured (first coloured SW battle) acrylics and edding special markers on a 200 foot white wall, two teams of artists will compete against each other to produce the most creative and cutting edge wall mural.

Audience participation
The results of the art battle at Village Underground will be judged by a panel of experts. The audience will also have a big say in which team emerges as victorious, as the crowd vote will be measured using a decibel reader. The wall mural will then be displayed at Village Underground from Thursday 5th March - Tuesday 10th March alongside key pieces from the 100 Pieces of Havana exhibition.

Secret Wars is finally getting some love from the USA! In the last 3 weeks there has been over 10 blogs talking about it (Hypebeast, Steeztoday)...While Nylon, The Independent and others have printed features out on us!

UPDATES....

We have been in NYC organising the first official Secret Wars stateside...We heard there are a couple of copy cat events set up out there and feel its time to flex some muscle and show the lovely american people how the europeans party.

Stockholm, Bristol and Brighton will aslo be starting very soon.

Queensbury (German pop band) x Secret Wars x Reebok

This is a weird but funny post.. Queensbury the pop band (German version of Girls Aloud), used the Secret Wars x Reebok ice cream van in their new video.

Its hard to see as the editing is so quick but Teck 1, Alfa, Jimi Crayon and Mr K all collaborated and painted the van back in July @ BBB.

Apparently this is all over German TV etc.
